Priorities

Evidence Informs, Bettering the Norms

Trustees of the Board define the organization's Mission, Values and Priorities, then monitor actual performance against operational expectations (CBE, 2025b). In keeping with the following priorities and aligned values (CBE, 2025a), various measures and some respective results are noted below (CBE, 2024):

  • Achievement
CBE ValueLearning is our central purpose.

According to the 2023-24 CBE's AEAMs:

    • Percentage of students who achieved Diploma Excellence were: 31.9 All, 18.8 EAL, 21.1 Self Identify as Indigenous, and 22.2 With Identified Special Education Needs. (p. 123)

    • Percentage of students who achieved PAT 6 Excellence were: 21.8 All, 18.1 EAL, 7.2 Self Identify as Indigenous, and 10.9 With Identified Special Education Needs. (p. 129)

  • Equity
CBE ValuePublic education serves the common good.

According to the 2023-24 CBE's Local Measures:

    • Of the feedback provided by the 11 member Student Advisory Council, 94.7% agreed that "Students receive the supports they need to be successful in their courses." (p. 84)

    • Of the 630 unique sessions offered for professional learning opportunities, there were 3 for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; 24 for English Language Learning; 21 for Inclusive Education; and 27 for Indigenous Education sessions. (p. 72)

  • Well-Being
    CBE Value: Students come first.

According to the 2023-24 CBE Student Survey:

    • The highest percentage of agreement with the questions tied to each well-being theme was 81.6% Resilience & Mental Health. (p. 120)

    • The lowest percentages of agreement for the students who self-identified as Indigenous with the questions tied to each summary measure was 64.3 Emotional Health, 65.1 Physical Health, and 64.2 Respectfully Challenging Policies or Decisions. (p. 120)

The CBE does many things well. They measure and monitor their work from a myriad of perspectives. They seek to improve any area in which the standards attained, or not attained, make that an imperative. CBE's strength is in its people. Its weakness? There aren't enough to do the work that must be done.

Scholars assert that a culturally responsive and sustaining education framework is based on four principles: "welcoming and affirming environments, high expectations and rigorous instruction, inclusive curriculum and assessment, and ongoing professional learning and support" (Stein et al., 2025, p. 40). If we believe that, then we must take every opportunity to overcome the threats public education faces.
